How Does HSA/FSA Work?
A little clarity on using your HSA/FSA.
What are HSA and FSA accounts?
A Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) lets you set aside money with tax advantages to pay for eligible medical expenses.
HSA balances roll over from year to year. FSAs are generally offered through an employer and have spending deadlines; some plans allow a limited carryover or grace period. Ask your benefits administrator about your plan’s eligibility and rules.
Where do the HSA/FSA savings come from?
The savings come from using pre-tax funds for eligible expenses, rather than paying with money that has already been taxed. Your actual savings depend on your tax situation.
This is a tax benefit, not an extra discount at checkout. Contribution limits change over time; check the current IRS limits and your plan’s terms.
Why might I need a Letter of Medical Necessity?
A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) documents a clinician’s assessment that a purchase addresses a specific medical need. If you qualify through Truemed, a licensed clinician can issue an LMN to support your HSA/FSA payment or reimbursement request.
An LMN does not guarantee reimbursement. Your plan administrator has the final say, so keep both the letter and your purchase receipt.
Can I pay with a credit card and request reimbursement?
Yes. Qualifying customers can pay with a regular credit card and submit a claim to their HSA/FSA administrator. Follow Truemed’s instructions and include the required documentation, such as your LMN and itemized receipt.
